You had a Mac in 1985! That alone is amazing; you were very early! I grew up in a household with an encyclopedia and a landline and the Yellow Pages, and while I agree that we should be grateful and amazed at whatβs become possible, Iβm also very glad I was born early enough not to grow up with it all. It makes it easier to appreciate it!
Yes, I was doing a lot of writing (I was a researcher) and someone told me it was the one to get. It cost an absolute fortune and had very little power. You had to keep inserting floppy disks β even the mention of them makes me feel ancient! I still use Macs.
I didn't get my first computer until ten years later, in the mid 90s; it had a disk drive, but not floppies. It had an external modem that of course occupied the phone line, and its display was 640 x 480.
It's funny to think about how those early computers seemed to us; I thought of typewriters, for example: "This is so much better than a typewriter!" I didn't have any sense of the "deeper" transformations to come, of course.
